The Centre is a registered educational charity and a company limited by guarantee.  It was established in 1994 to provide a focus for the ongoing development of the methods and applications of Self Managed Learning (SML).   After 20 years of the successful growth of SML, it seemed wise to create a Centre which could show how SML differed from other related approaches such as action learning, self development, open learning, etc

For over 15 years, the Centre has dedicated itself to:

• demonstrating how SML has helped hundreds of individuals and organisations through research, writing and publishing
• enabling people to learn more about the approach through workshops and conferences
• providing a network for organisations and individuals around the world who are or wish to be actively involved in SML

The Centre continues to grow and its more recent developments include introducing the SML way of learning to young people from the ages of 7 to 18, through the South Downs Learning Centre, and promoting high quality SML in organisations through its accreditation scheme.
